Julie & Will are your average farmers in Casco Township, Michigan.
And we have an above average appreciation for the beauty, peace, and liveliness that comes from farming. And, perhaps, an exceptional knack for improvisation. In the last five years since launching Improvisational Farmer LLC, just a little north of South Haven, Michigan, we have developed a simple model that works for us and hopefully for you, too.
We grow vegetables, raise chickens, keep our beef cows happy, and make jams and healthy snacks with local fruit. We network with a lot of local folks and collect additional items produced by our farmer friends. We deliver these delectable goods to a list of our customers/friends who have responded to an email that arrives about every 10 days.
There's never any obligation on your part to buy. We sell when stuff is ready to sell, and when we can fit it in to our family's busy schedule, given that we have two teenagers. We put your produce in a chill bag with a block of fake ice, and deliver it to your cottage, home, or office. You tape the check to the door, hide an envelope of cash under a rock, or surrender your charge card number to Julie, which is kept exceedingly safe. The next time we deliver, we pick up the packaging, and on it goes! Like life!
We are always excited to assemble for you an array of locally grown and produced goods so you can have fresh country fare throughout the season. Produce deliveries include vegetables from our farm, fruits from our farming friends & neighbors, often our farm eggs, and nearly every time a baked goodie--breads, cakes, muffins, or a dessert.
This year, we'll again deliver to South Haven and Kalamazoo/Portage, while adding customers in Douglas/Saugatuck. We appreciate it when friends refer their friends to us, and you are invited to promote us unabashedly!
In other big news, we are trying a new Farmer's Market: the YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids, each Thursday afternoon from 3 pm to 7 p.m. Julie has made the BIG decision not to sell at the South Haven Farmer's Market in 2011, in part out of a desire not to have every Saturday booked with that commitment. A difficult decision, and we'll miss each other at the market, but buying direct is still a great way for us to connect!
If you are a Grand Rapids resident or GR-based professional, we can possibly arrange for "produce bag" delivery or pickup on Thursdays during market, so feel free to contact us and get on our list.
Improvisational Farmer LLC is a forty-acre parcel, mostly "muck" with some good woods and sunny places for our large market gardens. We're located about five miles off of Lake Michigan in Casco Township, Michigan in Southwest Allegan County (between Saugatuck & South Haven). We had a handful of calves born this winter and our herd is about 15. Plus about 35 chickens. And two cats plus the miracle of Blake.
We don't use chemicals as we grow, and we weed by hand without any extra help (which shows). Sometimes--please don't say often--our produce is a bit on the ugly side, but please know that we love our beets and looks aren't everything! We are not certified organic because the paperwork has not been a priority.
It's just two of us--Will Hart & Julie Cowie-- plus Mother Nature growing the food. We offer beef from our lean but not mean cows a couple of times throughout the year. Buying beef by the quarter cow means you need to have an empty freezer ready. If you'd like more info about our beef, please contact us and get on our "beef" list.
Please peruse the site, especially the other stuff page, because there is a lot of other stuff going on. But that's a simple overview of who we are and how we grow. --Julie Cowie & Will Hart, Improvisational Farmer LLC
